The Digital Services at the Border programme is developing a new digital platform of services to help Border Force secure the UK border, and is one of the highest priority programmes within government. To help deliver this challenging programme, a skilled Hadoop Operations Lead is required to evolve and develop a big data store and underlying associated services. Utilising cutting edge technologies the system is deployed in a secure cloud environment running a distributed big data platform. The programme follows Agile principles, with a continuous integration pipeline and regular incremental releases. The programme requires that all resources are cleared to Security Check (SC) level.
Travel Post will mainly be based in Croydon, but travel to other HO premises and other Government offices will be required.
The following software development skills are required: • Hadoop (Hortonworks HDP preferable) • Platform Engineering and Production Support in a Linux platform • Security Architecture (TLS, Kerberos, Knox, Ranger, Network Security) • Experience managing Production environments • Supporting Java-based software applications (ability to read Java stacktraces) • Performance Tuning
• Technical ownership of the strategic Big Data store within the Digital Services at the Border programme • Hands on system development and support • Managing the implementation of new features, problem investigation / diagnosis and resolution. • Own the technical implementation design • Supporting the system and technical decisions at the TDA (technical design authority meeting) • Ensure the design address all hosting, security and NFR requirements • Ensure the system is able to gain security accreditation • Technical point of authority for Big Data implementations and advocate of high quality, maintainable software and systems • Mentoring, coaching and guidance for teams • Liaising with senior stakeholders to give appropriate updates on progress and issues
Design and deliver system leadership. Deliver and lead facilitation of workshops, webinars, and events. Provide credible facilitation of large scale learning programmes and supporting capability building within the delivery system. Lead and support client liaison support to review, identify and develop an appropriate support plan. Support development of learning materials such as online resources and slide decks. Actively contribute to the development sessions and contributing to online forums. Appraise and support development of competence of individuals. Provide input to guide the continuous review of content and materials appropriate to Improving service. Review and participate in the evaluation of programmes and supporting use of evaluation to inform learning from delivery.
